SB YouthLink was started as a Communication project by four UCSB students ( Regina Sarnicola, Jamie Birrenkott, Floriane Parmentier, and Patrick Neal). Their first field of interest was the gang violence and high gang membership of Santa Barbara. Their search for more information led them to the Westside Boys & Girls Club, located adjacent to a park well-known for being a "gang hangout". Their project took a sudden turn and evolved into SB YouthLink

Upon seeing the drastic need of the Westside Boys & Girls Club, and their valiant efforts to keep kids off the streets and out of gangs, it was decided that a mentorship program was necessary to properly address the needs of the children at the Club. With the help of more volunteers, the Westside Boys & Girls Club can continue to be an inviting and safe place for the youth to do homework, have fun, and resist gang influences.
